Bruxism Treatment

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a medical term for teeth grinding or clenching, often done unconsciously. It can happen during sleep (sleep bruxism) or while awake (awake bruxism). Common symptoms include grinding or clenching sounds (often noticed by a partner), worn down or flattened teeth, jaw pain or tightness, headaches (especially in the temples), tooth sensitivity or pain, and damage to dental work (crown, fillings, etc.). Causes include stress and anxiety, sleep disorders (like sleep apnea), abnormal bite or crooked teeth, and lifestyle factors (caffeine, alcohol, smoking, certain medications). Overuse of the masseter muscles may cause them to hypertrophy (enlarge) creating a very square jaw. Some woman complain that this masculinizes their features.

What Treatment Do You Offer To Address Symptoms Of Bruxism?

Treatment for Bruxism include use of mouthguards/nightguards, stress management, medication adjustment (if drug-induced). Treatment with anti-wrinkle medication known as neurotoxins (“Tox”) or neuromodulators like Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® can be used to address symptoms of Bruxism by weakening the masseter muscles. By doing so, the bight strength us reduced which results in less dental trauma and less aggravation for the mandibular nerve which can contribute to chronic migraine headaches especially in the temples. As the masseter muscle relaxes, its size will also be reduced which can lead to a slimming effect.

What Can I Expect During My Appointment?

You are required to provide pertinent medical history which the staff will review prior to meeting with you. A set of photos will be taken as part of your medical record since your appearance may change i.e. your face may appear slimmer. You will be asked to clench your jaw to assess the strength and boundaries of the muscle.

There is minimal discomfort during the treatment. A small gauge needle is used to administer the product. Your provider may apply gentle pressure to stop minimal bleeding to prevent bruising.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

Muscle relaxation may become apparent at 5-7 days and peaks at 12-14 days. The muscles regain strength over several weeks such that you may notice symptoms worsen at about 2-3 months depending on the dose and product. With regular treatment every 3 months, muscles remain weak for a prolonged period of time such that the duration lasts longer or a lower dose is required for the same period of time.

Follow Up appointments are scheduled 2 weeks after treatment. Photographs will be taken and a physical examination will be conducted to gauge the success of the treatment. Dosing adjustments are also made if necessary.
